Summary

What’s special about Cretan cheeses?

Cretan cheeses are prepared all year round from sheep and goat’s milk. Animals feed on a variety of wild greens and herbs, resulting in high-quality dairy products that encapsulate the flavours of Cretan nature. Local shepherds move their herds around Crete, chasing around the landscape greens and herbs, whose local availability changes over the seasons.

What will I do on this tour?

On this tour, we invite you to join a local shepherd in a traditional stone-built shepherd’s shelter – locally known as a mitato – for a cheesemaking workshop on the slopes of Mount Psiloritis.

We will milk the goats or sheep and prepare a seasonal Cretan cheese using this fresh milk. We will have the opportunity to taste local cheeses and experience a day in the life of a shepherd. There will also be time for a walk around the stunning nature around the shelter. The day will culminate in a sumptuous Cretan feast of local delicacies and spirits.
