Summary

Gorges around the Amari valley offer unique interactions with the geology, flora and fauna of Crete. This tour starts at an altitude of 400m on the edge of a village and ascends to a plateau with a cave-chapel at 800m. At the start of the walk, before starting our climb, we pass through old olive groves with some truly large olive trees. The path follows the side of the gorge and offers great views down and across the Amari valley, as well as encounters with Cretan birds of prey. After reaching the plateau, the path then takes us down the slopes of mount Psiloritis, walking through wild oak and pine forests on our way to the village, where we will sit down to rest and enjoy a traditional Cretan meal. The duration of the walk is approximately 4.5 hours and the walk, although not extremely steep, requires some physical fitness.
