Summary
Crete has many world renowned local cheeses, prepared all year round from sheep and goat’s milk. Cretan shepherds lead nomadic lives, moving their herds around Crete to follow the seasons. The herds feed on a variety of wild greens and herbs, resulting in high-quality dairy products that encapsulate the flavours of Cretan nature.
On this tour, we invite you to join a local shepherd in a traditional stone-built shepherd’s shelter – locally known as a mitato – for a cheesemaking workshop on the slopes of Mount Psiloritis. The shepherd will share his passion for the lifestyle and traditions of Cretan shepherding. He will demonstrate how to milk the goats or sheep, and we will have the chance to try our hand at milking. Using this milk, we will prepare and enjoy a seasonal Cretan cheese. We will have the opportunity to taste several local cheeses and experience a day in the life of a shepherd. There will also be time for a walk around the stunning nature around the shelter. The day will culminate in a sumptuous Cretan feast of local delicacies and wine.
